More Than a Piece of Paper

What earning my TESDA Photography NC II means to me.

Photography is probably one of the easiest creative fields to get into today. Get a decent camera or even a good phone, learn the basics, start shooting, and you're already on your way.

And honestly, there's nothing wrong with that. Most photographers, including myself, started simply because we enjoyed taking pictures.

But enjoying photography and choosing to make it your profession are two different things.

That’s one reason why earning my TESDA Photography NC II is something I’m genuinely proud of.

So, what exactly is Photography NC II?

Photography NC II is a national qualification under the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) in the Philippines.

It covers the practical skills expected from someone working professionally in photography: operating and composing with a camera, setting up lights and equipment, post-processing images, producing finished photographs, preparing work for exhibition, as well as basic workplace and professional practices.

And unlike a certificate you receive simply for attending a seminar or completing a short course, the National Certificate comes after your competency has been assessed.

In simple terms, you have to show that you can actually do the job.

That’s what I like about it.

Does a certificate make you a professional photographer?

Not by itself.

I've met hobbyists who are incredibly talented, and I've seen photographers without formal qualifications produce amazing work. Photography has never been about collecting certificates.

A beautiful photograph doesn't suddenly become better because the photographer has NC II written after their name.

But I also believe there comes a point when you have to separate knowing how to use a camera from knowing how to work as a photographer.

When photography becomes your profession, there are expectations beyond taking a good picture. You need to understand your equipment, lighting, workflow, post-production, dealing with clients, workplace safety, deadlines, consistency, and delivering a finished product.

That's where I see the value of the NC II.

It doesn't say that I'm better than the photographer standing next to me.

It simply says, my skills were assessed, and I met the standard.

And I'm proud of that.

A Little Humble Flex

I’ve been doing photography for many years now, and if there’s one thing this journey has taught me, it’s that you never really reach a point where you can say, “Okay, I know everything.”

There is always something new to learn.

So when I look at this framed certificate, I don't see something that magically made me a professional photographer. My years behind the camera, the assignments, difficult shoots, mistakes, clients, personal projects, and everything I've learned along the way mean much more than a piece of paper ever could.

But the certificate represents something too.

My portfolio shows what I can do.

My experience shows what I've been through.

My TESDA NC II is simply another proof that I took the time to have what I know formally assessed.

Maybe that's why I'm comfortable calling this a little humble flex.

Not because having a certificate puts me above hobbyists. I was a hobbyist once, too. That passion is exactly what brought me here.

It's because somewhere along the way, photography stopped being something I simply enjoyed doing and became a craft I decided to take seriously.

The certificate didn't make that happen.

It simply became one more proof of the work I put in to get here.
